4/22: Green Goings On

Hey, did you guys hear? There's some thing going on today about saving the planet or something. We're told it's kind of a big deal. Any-who, thought we'd give you some more fun ways to spend your Earth Day 2010 rather than planting a tree (not that you shouldn't do that, you probably should, saving the planet and all).

SUSTAINABLE CINEMA:  It's all about Moving Toward Sustainability tonight at UConn and the school's Earth Day Film Festival. And there are two choices for your green movie entertainment. Head to the main campus in Storrs for films about farming, including "Fresh," "Fridays on the Farm," "Good Food" and "The Real Dirt on Farmer John. Those films will run at the Student Union Theater from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Down at the Avery Point campus in Groton, there are three films about marine practices: "Farming the Seas," "River of Renewal" and "Eating Alaska" run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

FRUIT OF THE VINE: Just because it's Earth Day doesn't mean a little libation isn't in order. We just need to think a little harder about where our adult beverages come from. Head to M&R Liquors for an Earth Day "Green" Wine Tasting. No, there isn't a new kind of wine besides red and white. "Green wines" are either organically grown, organically made, bio-dynamic or fair trade.  Winery representatives will be on hand to guide you through your exploration of Earth Friendly alcohol. It's $20 to attend. Runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

GREEN FREE:  Anybody can get a little overwhelmed by all the environmentally friendly festivities going on today (and all week for that matter). So, as a respite, head to TheaterWorks in downtown Hartford for a little musical comedy. A production of "Souvenir" is playing right now. The show tells the story of the wealthy eccentric Florence Foster Jenkins. Jenkins believed she was a great opera singer. But there's just one problem. She was undeniably tone-deaf. But through a winning combination of determination and delusion, Jenkins popularity grew until she was singing sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall (even though she sang like all the rejects on 'Idol'). The show runs through May 23. Tickets are $39-$49. Tonight's performance is at 7:30 p.m.
