Shop This Week, Save Big

Attention all shoppers, tax-free week is in full swing. Any clothes or shoes under $300 per item or pair are sales tax free until Aug. 22. There was talk of scrapping the exemption because of the state's financial crisis.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell and the General Assembly’s majority Democrats were proposing to do away with the event over concerts that the state could no longer afford the tax break.

Connecticut has offered this week-long exemption from the 6 percent sales tax for nine years. It’s expected to cost the state $3.3 million.

Rell and lawmakers have been at odds on how to cover a two-year, $8.56 billion budget. Connecticut and Pennsylvania are the last remaining states that have not yet passed a budget.
