Although the Department of Motor Vehicles has spent six years and $26 million on modernizing its computer system, the agency has no "disaster recovery" steps in place in the event of a major malfunction, according to a new report from state auditors.
The DMV insists it does have an arrangement to back up the system, although auditors note there is nothing specifically outlined.
In addition, auditors say an inadequate review of the contract with 3M, the company that provided the software used during the upgrade, led to $2 million in cost overruns.
The DMV says it will consider using professional project manager services going forward.
