Tornadoes Confirmed in Several Towns

The National Weather Service says tornadoes touched down in Litchfield, Thomaston, Terryville, and Bristol Wednesday afternoon.

The official confirmation on the Litchfield County storms was made late Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Thursday, the agency determined a weak tornado hit the Blakeslee Street area of Bristol Wednesday afternoon.

NWS Meteorologist Mike Ekster said he made the determination based on the way treetops in the neighborhood were twisted off.

They looked at pictures taken by Steve Jefferson during the storm. Jefferson says he was at Fast Freddies gas station on Route 6 in Bristol looking South when he took the pictures. They appear to show a funnel-type cloud all the way to the ground. Areas South of Route 6 include Blakeslee Street.

National Weather Service investigators were shown the pictures by NBC Connecticut Thursday afternoon.  They called the photos "interesting", but said they couldn't determine if the pictures were in fact the tornado that caused the damage.

It was after touring the city that Ekster decided a tornado caused the damage for about 1.5 miles in Bristol.  The winds reached 90 miles-per-hour, which classifies it as an EF-1 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

The storms left as many as 54,000 Connecticut Light & Power customers in the dark Wednesday night. That number had been cut to about 13,000 by Thursday morning.

Damage was reported from Sharon, in the northwest corner of the state, to Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, Salem, Woodstock and in Fairfield County. Westport saw significant damage in the south end of town, but the National Weather Service says it was not a tornado that caused the damage there.
