Basketball Hoopla Invades Hartford

The City of Hartford will be bustling with basketball activity as two major tournaments are invading the capital city this weekend.

For the 8th consecutive year, the Big East Women's Basketball Championship will take place at the XL Center.

The 15 games are scheduled to be played from Friday through Tuesday and UConn women lead the way.

The University of Hartford is hosting the America East 2011 Men's and Women's  Championships between March 3 and 6.

These two tournaments are expected to bring money into the state.

"The projected economic impact to the Greater Hartford Region is over $2 million," Laura Soll, of the Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau, said.

Athletes, coaches, families, and faithful supporters are flocking to the area in hopes of seeing their favorite team take home the title and that means more than 2,500 room nights for area hotels.

More than 16 restaurants are participating in the events by offering special promotions for tourists and locals.

Patrons can enjoy discounts on food, fan specialty drinks, extended hours and live music at some locations.

Parking at the Morgan Street Garage in downtown Hartford on Sunday will be $4. It's open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Anyone interested in keeping up with all of the activities can pick up a Big East Fan Guide at either the XL Center or the Greater Hartford Welcome Center at 100 Pearl S.
