Football Opens Recruiting Floodgates

OK, forget what we've been writing the past few weeks, specifically that football coach Paul Pasqualoni, compared to his Big East counterparts, is struggling to recruit kids to UConn.

The Huskies finally got on the scoreboard in late May with their first 2012 commitment, New Jersey offensive lineman Tyler Samra. Three weeks later, they landed wide receiver John Green. Nice progress, for sure, but still a long ways to go.

Well, the flood gates have been opened. Since writing about Green Tuesday, three more 2012 commitments have been announced.

And just like that, Pasqualoni and his staff silence the doubters. Maybe they really do know what they're doing.

The Hartford Courant's Desmond Connor provides background on the three newest commitments:

Melifonwu: A 6-foot-3, 195-pound safety at Grafton (Mass.) High. … He went to UConn's camp and ran a 4.5 second 40 and had a vertical jump of 37 inches.

Cunningham: A 6-2, 195-pound wide receiver out of Bayside High in Palm Bay, Florida.

Jon Hicks: A 6-3, 235-pound middle linebacker at Palmyra (PA) Area High, he also had an offer from Temple.

What we wrote yesterday still holds today: The recent recruiting flurry should mitigate concerns that the Huskies staff was lost on the recruiting trail. Landing players is key, but more important than that is landing players who end up contributing. It will be a few years before we're able to judge the caliber of player Pasqualoni is bringing to UConn. For now, we're just happy that the 2012 class is coming together.

Now the Huskies just need to figure out the offensive backfield for 2011.
