Summitt Congratulates Huskies, Auriemma

On Monday night, minutes before UConn was officially crowned 2014 NCAA Champions, ESPN's Doris Burke said that Geno Auriemma's ninth national title should put him in the same conversation will legendary coaches John Wooden and Phil Jackson. Of course, any such conversation starts with women's basketball coaching legend Pat Summitt, who won eight championships during her tenure with Tennessee.

Not surprisingly, Auriemma and Summitt had their battles -- both on the court and elsewhere -- but there had always been (albeit sometimes grudging) respect there, too. And Following the Huskies win Tuesday, Summitt released a statement acknowledging the program's accomplishments.

"Congratulations to the UConn Huskies for winning the 2014 NCAA national championship," Summitt said, via BND.com. "My compliments also to coach Geno Auriemma for winning his ninth national title. He has accomplished this feat in record time with the help of some incredibly talented student-athletes and staff members. My best to each and every one of them. Enjoy the moment and cherish the memories."
