In 2007, Brad Pitt created the Make It Right foundation to build houses for those in the Lower Ninth Ward whose homes were lost in Hurricane Katrina.

Make It Right, costing almost $45 million, has put up about 90 homes that are pretty impressive. Unfortunately, Make It Right has been struggling to fill them. The Ninth Ward is now a "retirement-community version of its former self," writes the New Republic.

Make It Right is struggling to finance the remaining 150 homes it has promised. And now, it seems the homes will be open to buyers who didn't live in the neighborhood before Katrina. But because the population is so small, the area has been unable to attract everyday stores and services, like supermarkets or fast food restaurants. Because Make It Right is forcing the city to provide utilities and roads, it's turning out to be a costly albeit well-intended endeavor.

Will filling the zone with residents just take some time? Read the full story on the New Republic and see what you think.
