Meet Your New Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield

At long last, Andrew Garfield has been introduced as the star of the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot. Now we can all get on with our lives.

"From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film 'The Social Network,' to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker,” Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures, said in a statement released late yesterday.

It was a thick field of candidates vying for the role. Beyond Garfield there was Logan Lerman ("Percy Jackson & The Olympians"), Aaron Johnson ("Kick-Ass"), Anton Yelchin ("Star Trek"), Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliott"), Frank Dillane ("Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince "), Michael Angarano ("Gentleman Broncos "), Alden Ehrenrich ("Tetro") and Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right"). Every actor between 15 and 30 probably asked for an audition.

It looks like Sony made the right choice in coronating Garfield, who is probably the most talented and accomplished actor of the group. He was arguably the best thing about "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which starred Heath Ledger (in his final role), Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. He's also won a BAFTA (the British Oscars) for his work in "Boy A," and was widely praised for his work in "The Red Riding Trilogy."

In addition to "The Social Network," he also has "Never Let Me Go" coming out this fall. Based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel of the same name, the film co-stars Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley as kids at a British boarding school who slowly realize the horrifying truth about what they're being prepared for. If you haven't seen it, watch the trailer -- it's hella creepy.

Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") will be taking over directing duties from Sam Raimi for the fourth film, which places our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler back to his origins as "a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises." It will of course be shot in 3D and is due to hit theaters July 3, 2012.

As happy as we are about Garfield, we still think Donald Glover got jobbed.
