“Scarface” Remake Getting Scripted by “Training Day” Writer David Ayer

If you're looking for a guy to write a screenplay about a drug-fueled monster with no regard for the law or human life, you could do a lot worse than the guy who wrote "Training Day."*

Ayer, whose script for "Training Day" helped Denzel Washington win an Oscar, has been hired to write a new, updated version of the 1983 Al Pacino classic "Scarface," reported Deadline.

In fact, Ayer's new take on the story will blend the '83 version with elements of the original 1932 film to tell the story of an immigrant who comes to America and muscles his way to the top of a criminal empire. You can be sure this will play great in the border states, let's hope it comes out while Congress in gnashing its teeth over what to do about immigration.

"I see it as the story of the American dream, with a character whose moral compass points in a different direction. That puts it right in my wheelhouse," Ayer told Deadline. "I studied both the original Ben Hecht-Howard Hawks movie and the DePalma-Pacino version and found some universal themes....There are enough opportunities in the real world today that provide an opportunity to do this right. If it was just an attempt to remake the 1983 film, that would never work."

Ayer is currently putting the finishing touches on "End of Watch," which he wrote and directed, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as partners on the LAPD and best friends. We're gonna guess one of them sleeps with the others wife--any takers?

*Please not the the lack of a "little friend" joke.
