This Week's Movies: “Paranormal Activity 2,” “Hereafter” Lead Pack

A slow week of new releases is led by the sequel to one of the greatest word-of-mouth success stories in movie history, the expansion of a woefully disappointing effort from a legend and a film that gave birth to a musical genre.

Paranormal Activity 2
After experiencing what they believe to be a series of break-ins, a family installs a surveillance system, only to discover from the footage that their relative Katie, from the original “PA,” is responsible. In theaters everywhere, watch the trailer.

"Hereafter"

From director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Peter Morgan comes a film that tells three interwoven stories about a man who can talk with the dead, played by Mat Damon, a woman who has a near-death experience and a young boy who loses his twin brother. “Kalamity”
A young man goes back home to lick his wounds after a rough break-up only to discover that one of his best friends has become unstable and withdrawn in this thriller written and directed by James Hausler. In limited release, watch the trailer.

“Rising Stars”
The musical acts find themselves in a reality-TV competition to see who can create the best song and video in this film that looks like it’s about three years too late to cash in on the whole “High School Musical” thing. In limited release, watch the trailer.
