On July 16th, NBC Connecticut, along with the Connecticut Broadcasters Association, presented the first annual Gerry Brooks Scholarship Award to Skyler Haines of Amston during a ceremony at Dunkin Donuts Park.

Skylar attended RHAM High School and plans to study broadcast journalism and international studies at Quinnipiac University. Skylar wrote for her high school newspaper, hosted her own show on community television, and taught English in Mexico. She created the Peace, Love and Art: Hope for the Children of the Serapio School in Mexico Foundation to help the children she taught there, and wrote about the entire experience in her book, Changed.

In Mexico, Skyler found her ability to be a “voice for the voiceless.” She also found her passion for international news, leading to her current aspirations to be a foreign correspondent.

The Gerry Brooks Scholarship is awarded to a high school student that demonstrates excellence in broadcasting, journalism, marketing or engineering. A former anchor on NBC Connecticut for twenty-five years, Gerry Brooks was inducted into the Connecticut Broadcaster Hall of Fame in 2015.
