Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays – Commit To Color!

Everyone's still buzzing about the fashion winners and sinners from last week's Costume Institute Gala but what about the makeup? Color was on display on everyone from Rihanna (who made a statement in bright blue shadow) to Jessica Alba (whose lips were a bold berry).

With Summer just around the corner, Sara Strand, founder of POP Beauty Makeup (known for it's amazing bold colors) says it's the perfect time to play with your hues! Her philosophy is "shake up your makeup!"

When using color, Sara recommends focusing on one feature, like bright lips or bright eyes. The first thing to do is "even your skin tone with a good foundation base. Once you do that you have a completely blank canvas. Then you can add color and make it pop."

As for the theory that only certain people can wear certain colors, throw that out the window - every color has so many shades. "People say I can't wear blue. Yes you can, it just has to be the right blue. Within every color there's a shade that will suit you."

"Color can be a little threatening if you're used to using beiges and browns… So instead of using black or brown eyeliner move into a navy. As you get braver, a bright turquoise looks amazing." To subtly add color to eyes, "line your eyes close to your lashes with black, following your natural lash line. On top of the black, dust a bright purple or green. This will make you look fresh and awake."

As we move into Summer, Sara says pastels and neons are huge. For eyes, POP's "Lid Pastel" features soft feminine "sorbet" shades like sweet baby pink and glowing pistachio. For your pucker, "Lip Pastel" is a quad with four lip glosses: yellow, pink, lilac and baby blue. For neons, "Lid Neon" is a super fun set with six super bright shades: pretty pink, ripe orange, juicy yellow, bright blue, pastel turquoise and apple green.

And if you're really afraid to make a commitment to color, Sara suggests starting with your nail color - especially your toes! This is a trick even Michelle Obama follows!
