Emma Thompson: Sexism in Hollywood Has Become ‘More Prevalent'

Is sexism finally beginning to disappear in Hollywood? Not so according to Emma Thompson.

The A-list actress recently sat down with a British magazine to discuss the unpredictable industry she participates in. As it turns out, Thompson really wishes the world would improve for the sake of women.

"When I was younger, I really did think we were on our way to a better world and when I look at it now, it is in a worse state than I have known it, particularly for women and I find that very disturbing and sad," she told Radio Times. "I don't think there's any appreciable improvement and I think that, for women, the question of how they are supposed to look is worse than it was even when I was young."

She added, "So no, I am not impressed, at all. I think it's still completely s--t, actually."

In her latest movie titled "The Legend of Barney Thomson," Thompson, 56, finds herself playing a 77-year-old prostitute. It's a role she's happy to play but also one where she wishes someone older could have been given the opportunity.

"It is a bit ageist," she shared. "It would be really nice to get someone who is actually 77 to play her, but it's a wildly comic role and I couldn't resist."

While Thompson isn't the first to speak out on sexism–Jennifer Garner and Helen Mirren have also voiced their opinions on the issue–the actress hopes her experience can open the eyes to others in the industry.

"I get behind as many young female performers as I can," she explained. "And actually a lot of the conversations with them are about exactly the fact that we are facing and writing about the same things and nothing has changed and that some forms of sexism and unpleasantness to women have become more entrenched and indeed more prevalent."
