“Game of Thrones” Gets Its Own Beer

Time to dust off those drinking horns. HBO's medieval fantasy show "Game of Thrones" launched a new beer just in time for the start of its third season.

The premium cable network partnered with Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, N.Y.  to create a beer that, unlike the heavy themes in the show, boasts a smooth, easy-drinking taste in the form of a blonde ale.

“If you were to bottle HBO's Game of Thrones, what would it taste like? I'd guess it would be something dark and intense. However, the folks at Brewery Ommegang disagreed,” said Whitney Matheson of USA Today.

The beer, dubbed the "Iron Throne," is a 6.5 percent alcohol-by-volume Begian blonde ale brewed with grains of paradise and lemon zest, giving it a peppery and bright citrus taste.

“Iron Throne was named as a nod to the blonde Lannister family currently occupying the throne,” Allison Capozza, who manages publicity for the brewery told Today.com.

Like the show that inspired it, the beer was made to be enjoyed by the masses.

“We wanted to start with something that was accessible and very drinkable for viewers of the show that may not be familiar with our beers,” Capozza said.

The brew will be available in 43 states where Ommegang beers are sold on March 31, the same day "Game of Thrones" returns for its third season.
