Get Outta Here: Horror Film's Comedy Designation by Globes Perplexes Fans

The Golden Globes announced Wednesday the film was being submitted for consideration in the musical/comedy category

Remember all those laugh out loud guffaws from the horror movie "Get Out"? Well, someone does. The Golden Globes announced Wednesday the film was being submitted for consideration in the musical/comedy category. It's a curious decision that has perplexed many fans of the film, which earned $253 million worldwide since its release.

But, those familiar with the Golden Globes know this isn't the first time a film has had an awards designation that appears curious. The 2015 Matt Damon sci-fi vehicle "The Martian" was also placed in the musical/comedy category, which left a few scratching their heads at the time.

Even "Get Out" director Jordan Peele had a bit of fun with the selection.

But to be clear it's not the Golden Globes that decide what category the films will be judged in, but rather the studios and filmmakers. These decisions are often made gauging which category the film has the best chance at both landing nominations and taking home statuettes. The drama category in this year's Globes is expected to be stuffed with films like "Dunkirk," "Three Billboards," as well as fan favorite superhero flicks like "Wonder Woman" and "Logan." The upcoming Steven Spielberg drama "The Post," starring Meryl Streep as Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham and co-starring Tom Hanks is also sure to take a slot in the drama category.

But still, many took to social media to decry the move, with some pointing out designating the film as a comedy potentially undercut the racism plot that drove the film.

For what it's worth, Damon took home the Globe in 2015 for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for "The Martian."  And the film itself was the Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy or Musical.
