Matthew McConaughey Explains Why His First 2 Trophies Were a Lie

Matthew McConaughey is an accomplished actor who has earned some of the most esteemed awards in the industry. Unfortunately, he recently discovered that the first two things he ever won as a child were actually a lie.

The “Dallas Buyers Club” actor stopped by the “Tonight Show” Thursday to promote his new sci-fi movie “Interstellar” and dished to Jimmy Fallon about his sham awards.

In 1977, an eight-year-old McConaughey won the title of “Little Mr. Texas,” a label his mother constantly referenced. A few years ago, the Oscar winner came across a picture of himself holding the trophy, and after enlarging it on his computer screen, discovered that the plaque label stated that he was the runner-up of that competition. He immediately called his mother to clarify the discrepancy.

“Well, the kid who won had a lot more money than us and he bought a three-piece suit, so we call that cheating,” McConaughey said of his mothers explanation. “You’re Little Mr. Texas.”

Apparently, McConaughey’s mother had a history of helping him cheat in order to win.

In the 5th Grade, McConaughey had entered a school poetry contest and after a few failed attempts at pleasing his mother with his poetry skills, Mrs. McConaughey pulled out a book of poems and selected one for her son to submit as his own.

“So, I wrote it and I won,” he admitted. “My first two trophies were runner-up and plagiarism.”

The Oscar winner can honestly assert that hard work, and not his mother's meddling, is what earned him of his accolades as an adult.
