Psy, Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj also walk away winners.

It was time for Europe to recognize and award music's greatest, and you'll find that the singers they love are no different than the popular names in the States.

During the 2012 MTV European Music Awards--held in Frankfurt, Germany, and hosted by none other than Heidi Klum--stars Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and boy band One Direction walked away as the big winners of the night.

T. Swift won three awards, which included the top honor of Best Female Performer, which was presented to her by Lana Del Rey, Best Live Performer and Best Look categories.

Meanwhile, the British boy band continued their upward success also with three wins for Best New Act, Best Fans (clearly) and Best UK and Ireland Act. One Direction wasn't able to be present at the awards show (boo) but they were able to air a pre-recorded acceptance speech.

Last, but certainly not least, newly single Bieber took home the Best Male, Best Pop and the Best World Stage Performer awards. Other winners included PSY, who got the Best Video award for his oh-so-catchy "Gangnam Style," Del Rey was awarded with Best Alternative and Nicki Minaj for Best Hip-Hop.

The awards show honored the late Whitney Houston with the Global Icon accolade by holding a tribute led by Alicia Keys and voiced by Beyonce. "Whitney Houston had an incredible ability to captivate and mesmerise us," Keys told the crowd. "As a little girl I looked up to her so much, and seeing her perform with that voice and that presence allowed me to dream of creating music that touched people in the same way."

The acts taking the stage to perform included The Killers, No Doubt, Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen and Rita Ora, while Swift closed the awards show with her famous track off of her Red album, 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
