Ones to watch: Only time will tell if Michael Phelps actually does retire following the London 2012 Games, but today will see the swimming phenomenon back in the pool and competing in the 400m IM. Phelps has signed up to compete in seven Olympic trial events this week: the 200m and 400m IM, 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m butterfly and the 200m backstroke. In contrast, swimming's current "it" boy Ryan Lochte has signed up for 11 events at the trials and will compete against Phelps in the 400m IM, 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m and 200m butterfly  and 200m backstroke. Let the battles begin!

What happens: While swimmers schedule their races in advance, they are free to scratch any and all events from their program. Announcements are made prior to the race concerning participants.

The event: Track & Field: men's javelin throw (final), women's and men's 5,000m (qualifying heats) and women's and men's 800m (finals).

When: 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network.

One to watch: Molly Huddle grew up in Elmira, N.Y. and now resides in Providence, RI. The runner suffered a calf injury at the 2008 U.S. Olympic team trials for Beijing and finished tenth in the 5,000m. Hoping to better that performance, she'll run in the 5,000 qualifying heats today. Coming off a foot problem, Huddle did not advance to the 5,000 final at the Daegu 2011 World Championships so the pressure is on for her to perform in order to make the Olympic team.

What happens: The top three athletes in the each individual running event will qualify to make the Olympic team and journey to London.
