3,000 Dragon Boaters to Compete in Hartford

Head to Hartford this weekend for Asian food, drinks, entertainment – and boat racing.

Riverfront Recapture’s 13th Annual Riverfront Dragon Boat and Asian Festival kicks off Saturday morning at the Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Ninety-two teams and 3,000 paddlers will take the river by storm and compete to win points toward a spot in next year’s championship in Ravenna, Italy.

Fifty-eight of those teams are local and feature participants from nonprofits and businesses such as Aetna and The Hartford. Thirty-four club teams hail from N.Y., R.I., Penn., Mass., Vt. And N.J.

This represents a 33 percent increase in participants over last year’s competition.

“With more entries in this year’s race than ever before, the Hartford-East Hartford Riverfront has established itself as one of the most popular dragon boating sites in the United States,” said Charlie Myers, Director of Events and Programs for Riverfront Recapture.

The event is free and open to the public.
