February: A Hot Month for Shopping

Are you itching to buy a big-screen TV or make over your house with new furniture?

You're in luck; February is one of the best months to go shopping.

"It's a hot month because we have tons of specials. A lot of [items go] on clearance," said Lynne Napoli-Kyle, General Manager of Best Buy in Manchester.

Many high-end television brands go on sale this month, as retailers clear their showrooms to make way for new merchandise.

"We're transitioning from...last year's models into newer models," added Napoli-Kyle.

"All our 2014 models are going to be going out of stock," said Brian Ostrowski, of Best Buy in Manchester.

Other retailers are also offering big discounts. NBC Connecticut found a 55-inch Samsung LED TV on www.Amazon.com for 40 percent off.

Furniture is also on sale this month.

"We're talking about 40-percent discounts on special orders, or custom orders," said Jedd Reich, owner of Furniture Barn in Cheshire.

This month, Furniture Barn is slashing $100 off every $1,000 customers spend at the store.

If you're looking to save more, the store is also offering deep discounts on floor samples.

"On floor samples, a sofa that might've retailed for $2,999-- an expensive, showroom sample in some cases, you're going to get that for $1,500," explained Reich.

But, what if you want to get off the couch and enjoy a nice vacation? Melissa Albright, a travel agent with Wethersfield Travel said there's no time like the present.

"February is a great time for places like Europe, Bermuda. The weather is a little bit cooler [than in the summer]. The crowds are less, the fares are better, the rates are better at hotels," said Albright.

Turns out, rates are a lot better. Bermuda is offering vacation packages from now through April that are about 50 percent cheaper than the summer months.

If you have your heart set on going to Europe on a budget, Ireland is the place to be.

"In Ireland, you can expect to save $500-$800 per person on airfare. Hotel rates [are] maybe $50-$100 cheaper per night," said Albright.

However, Albright warns that if you'd like a better deal, it's best to book your February trip in the fall.

"The sooner, the better...you get the lowest fares...for Europe in February, in the fall-- October, November."

Before you book your next vacation or go out and buy electronics or furniture, experts say it's always best to shop around, before making a purchase.

"No matter what you're looking for, it's always a good idea to keep an eye on all those circulars, the things you get in the mail, the newspaper deals, just to see what's going out on out there, because your local merchants could have sales at any time," said Mandy Walker, Senior Projects Editor for Consumer Reports.
