A Burlington man reached out to NBC Connecticut Responds, saying hackers have stolen his identity twice, which he believes among other things, gave them access to his eBay account and allowed someone to fraudulently charge $264 in his name.
Lou Pisano was surprised when he received an email saying he owed eBay money for seller’s fees.
“I haven’t sold anything in like 10 years, so this has to be a scam,” he said.
But the emails continued, at first saying the company would suspend his account, then threatening to send him to collections.
“At first I was going to say, “I’m not paying this, I don’t care what they do,’” Pisano said. “But it’s not good to have something in collections.
That’s when Pisano called the company. He said an eBay representative confirmed his account was hacked and that they’d waive the fees.
He thought the issue went away, until months later, when he learned the eBay agent did not waive the fees. The company told him, once again, he’d have to pay up. His concern was reiterated in another call to customer service. An agent told him there was nothing they could do.

“To tell me that there’s no other remedy except for me to pay was a little disturbing,” said Pisano. “It wasn’t the money, it was the principle.”
So, Pisano turned to NBC Connecticut Responds. An eBay representative said the agent misunderstood Pisano’s claim and a few days later, the company offered him a full credit.
