12/8: Nuns and Holiday Standards

CHRISTMAS MYSTERY: Everyone's favorite nun is back at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven. "Sister Christmas Catechism:  The Mystery of the Magi's Gold" is playing right now on the theater's Stage II. In the show, Sister takes on the mystery that has intrigued historians throughout the ages: What happened to the Magi's gold? (We know that one's always bugged us too.) Using her own unique set of tools, and assisted by local choirs and audience members, Sister creates a living nativity filled with all sorts of gifts and plenty of laughs. Tickets are $20 to $25.  You can catch tonight's performance at 7 p.m., or see the show Wednesdays-Sundays through Dec. 21. Click here for show times and more info.

SMOOTH STANDARDS:  Multi-Grammy nominee Dave Koz is bringing his saxophone to the Palace Theater in Waterbury. But it's not just his horn, Koz is bringing some of his friends for a Smooth Jazz Christmas. Koz, Rick Braun, David Benoit, Brenda Russell and Peter White are joining together to perform some of their own hits, as well as a variety of holiday standards. The opening act might be just as impressive. Be prepared to be wowed by Connecticut's own up-and-coming jazz prodigy, 16-year-old Vincent Ingala.  Tickets are $40. Show's at 6:45 p.m.

A VERY JERRY CHRISTMAS:  No this isn't a surprise show from Seinfeld. Jerry Douglas, widely renowned dobro player (just click here), is taking his holiday act to the Fairfield Theatre Company-StageOne tonight. Douglas has a foundation in bluegrass, but can impress just as much with jazz, blues, folk and straight-ahead country. His style and talent as a composer have even earned him comparisons to the likes of Béla Fleck and David Grisman. Tickets for this special holiday show are $67. Show's at 7:30 p.m.
