8/20: Wonka, Wailers & Whales

A stage performance of a classic children's book, a concert with some legendary reggae performers, and a chance to drink with some very large mammals.

GOLDEN TICKET:  It may be Roald Dahl's most beloved story.  Tonight at Hamden High School The Whitney Players Theater Company (made up of actors from the Hamden/New Haven/North Haven area) will put on a performance of Willy Wonka.  From Augustus Gloop & Veruca Salt to Slugworth and all the Ooompa Loompas, the show (made famous in movies starring Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp) will take you to a chocolate covered land of Pure Imagination.  The show, which runs through Saturday, is intended for all ages, and tickets costs no more than $15 a person.  7:30 PM.

WAILING AWAY:  Bob Marley may be gone, but the Wailers are still around, and tonight, the Original Wailers are coming to New Haven.  The group is made up of two of the band members who started in the early '60s.  Interestingly, there is also a group named simply the Wailers, started by another original member (confused yet?).  Anyway, The Original Wailers will give you a night of reggae at Toad's Place for just $22.  Live Now is also on the evening's bill.  9:30 PM.

WHALING AWAY:  It's an opportunity you may not get again (and probably never thought you'd have in the first place).  Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration is offering you a chance to drink with the whales tonight.  Ocean Blue Catering is hosting "Cocktails with the Whales" in front of the aquarium's Arctic Coast exhibit, home to their three beluga whales.  You sip drinks like the signature "Belugatini," and munch on hors d' oeuvres.  (It's unclear if the food has clever names too.)  It's just $5 per person, but you do have to pay for drinks and food.  We're assuming the Don't Feed the Animals still applies.  6:30 - 8:30PM.
