9/27: Truckin', Tailgating and Tapas

CALLING ALL DEADHEADS: Come “channel the Dead” tonight at Toads Place in New Haven and experience Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead tribute band. Playing together since 1997, DSO is credited for charming long-time fans with playing actual Grateful Dead set-lists from the 60s, 70s and 80s. In fact, members of the Dead, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, rock out to DSO so hard that they asked John Kadlecik, founding guitarist of DSO to join their new band, Further, in 2009. With hundreds of tour dates a year, Dark Star Orchestra has certainly brought the Dead’s music to this generation forever changing the iPods of new fans. Tickets are $25. The show starts at 9 p.m.

FOOTBAL AND A SONG: Finally, the long-lost counterpart that Monday night football has been missing, an open mic! At Black Bear Saloon in downtown Hartford tonight, football fanatics can watch the Packers take on the Bears with the soothing sounds of amateur singers howling in the background. Lined from floor to ceiling with flat-screen TVs, not a second of the game will be missed. And with a bunch of food and drink specials, you’re sure to hear that creepy guy from your office singing his rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing” in-between plays. Who invited him anyway?

DINING DELIGHT: Offering a $24 pre-fixe menu every Monday, Norwalk’s upscale eatery, Meigas, is the place to go for bargain priced tapas and paella. This Zagat-rated Spanish restaurant, which means “magic” in the northern Espanol language of Galicia, is not only praised for its authentic ambiance but also for its innovative cuisine. The pre-fixe menu offers a number of appetizers including the popular Calamares a la Plancha, a dish of grilled baby squid with peppers, tomato, mango and citrus vinaigrette. A full-sized entrée is also included as well as a dessert tasting.
