A Circus Like None You've Seen Before

Who doesn’t love the Circus? Games, popcorn, exotic animals, performers – it doesn’t take much more to entice a kid. But this year, the circus in town will wow adults too.

While we are all for beach trips, parks and the pool, there’s one indoor summer event we cannot let you miss.

The U.S. premiere of Ireland’s hit production Circus is featured in New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas.

Circus is an energetic performance that will enchant audiences despite age. The University Theatre at the Yale School of Drama has been transformed into a 19th century circus tent.

But don’t expect the typical Ringling Bros. Circus and Barnum and Bailey act! Sure there will plenty of acrobatics, circus treats like cotton candy – my favorite – and moments deserving of an “Oooh!” or “Aaaw!” but I like that this Circus tells a real story.

The play takes inspiration from Federico Fellini’s 1950s film La Strada, weaving in the tale of small-time circus act, Gubu and Harle. You will be mesmerized by this fascinating and endearing story of love and loss.

If you are looking for an afternoon, or evening of fantasy and thrills, or maybe you just need to escape the heat, Circus is just the thing!

The show runs through June 20, at 3 and 8 p.m.

Call or visit the Shubert Theater Box Office (247 College Street, New Haven) at 203-562-5666 or 888-736-2663.

Be sure to check out the many other events offered by New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas, which runs through June 27!
