Charges Pending After Trooper Rear Ended on Route 9

A state trooper has been taken to the hospital after his cruiser was struck on Route 9 northbound in Middletown on Friday morning, and police said charges are pending.

Trooper Donald Dunning was working in a construction zone in the left lane between exits 9 and 10 when his cruiser was rear-ended around 10:25 a.m. Friday, police said.

Police said Dunning had activated his cruiser lights and the left lane was closed due to construction.

According to police, 42-year-old Geoffrey Weaving, of North Haven, was driving northbound in the right lane when "he suddenly turned into the closed left lane" and struck Dunning's cruiser.

Police said both vehicles were heavily damaged.

Dunning was taken to Middlesex Hospital for treatment of minor head and neck injuries. Weaver was not hurt, according to police.

State police are investigating the accident and said charges against Weaving are pending.

State Police remind drivers to slow down at construction zones or when you see emergency lights and ask anyone who witnessed the accident to contact Troop F in Westbrook at either 1-800-256-5761 or 860-399-2100.
