There are two historic houses in Bridgeport, the last remnants of Bridgeport's once-thriving "Little Liberia" neighborhood, which was settled around 1820 and the city will soon decide whether to renovate them.
The organization wants to restore the 1848 homes, which belonged to the Freeman sisters in the city's South End. The houses were homes of free black residents and built when the state outlawed slavery, the Associated Press previously reported.
On Tuesday night, the City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to allocate $47,000 from the city's federal Community Development Block Grant to the nonprofit Mary and Eliza Freeman Center for History and Community.
The Freeman Center also applied for a $100,000 grant from the 1772 Foundation -- which funds restoration projects -- to help pay for stabilizing the boarded-up structures.
