Deadline Looms: Scramble to Save Papers

Seven state representatives and three senators are trying to help save the press.

The Bristol Press, actually, along with the New Britain Herald and nearly a dozen weekly papers.  They're all scheduled to fold by January if a buyer doesn't come forward.

They're meeting Monday to continue a discussion about what state or local programs may be available to sweeten the deal for a potential buyer.

The papers are owned by The Journal Register Company.  Employees were notified in early November that the papers were in grave danger of closing.

The final issues will be published on January 16, unless they are either sold or in negotiations for a sale.
