Where's the Beach?

Hammonasset State Park Beach is being hit hard by erosion

The beach is disappearing at Hammonasset State Park.

Hammonasset State Park, the largest on the shoreline, has more than two miles of beach. Erosion is taking a toll on the western section of the beach and threatening to take two bathhouses and a boardwalk along with it.

The State Department of Environmental Protection wants to put 600,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach to help, but DEP officials said that could cost between $6 million and $20 million.

Consultants recommended the DEP also add a seawall, but some lawmakers said it may be too expensive for a time in which the state has budget problems.

More on the beach erosion is posted on the state DEP site.
