Hollerin', Frogs, and Skillet Tossing Highlight Area Fairs

The calendar has turned to September, which means a return to school for some, and cooler nights for all.

But it's also fair season in Connecticut, with more than a dozen major fairs taking place over the next few weeks. From rides and games, to fried food and candied apples, there's something for everyone at the annual festivals.

Here is a list of the fairs in and around Connecticut:

Woodstock Fair, Sept. 2-5: The fair includes tractor, horse, and Ox pulls, a craft tent, mammoth pumpkins and farm animals. Entertainment includes shows by The Guess Who, Foghat and Bo Bice.

Haddam Neck Fair, Sept. 2-5: A skillet throwing contest, a beard contest and much more highlights the fair this year. There will also be truck pulls, a horse show and music.

Goshen Fair, Sept. 3-5: Check out the Wamogo Timber Team Lumberjack Contest, or a woodcutting demonstration. There is plenty of music, and an antique tractor pull.

Hebron Harvest Fair, Sept. 8-11: The theme of this year's fair is "Honoring Heroes". Get a chance to see a demolition derbies plus a Civil War encampment. There are agricultural exhibits, music, a talent show and even a goat obstacle course.

North Haven Fair, Sept. 8-11: In addition to the food and rides, check out a pie-eating contest, Rosie's Racing Pigs and pedal tractor pulling. Entertainment includes tribute bands Fleetwood Maxx and Beatles Forever.

Wapping Fair, Sept. 8-11: A sword swallower highlights the entertainment at the 119th year of the fair. There will also be aerial acrobat, as well as more than 700 baking and craft exhibits.

Bethlehem Fair, Sept. 9-11: Kicks off with Cruise Night on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. Driver and passengers who arrive in Antique, Classic and Special Interest cars and trucks will receive free admission (cars must be 1975 or older). There will also be a Hollerin' Contest, music and more.

Ledyard Fair, Sept. 9-11: Irish step dancers, a sheep show, and lawnmower races are just some of the things you'll see at this year's fair. The Miss Ledyard Fair Pageant will also be held.

Four Town Fair, Sept. 15-18: Check out the fair's Frog Jumping contest, as well as a Car Show, Women's Skillet Throw and plenty of music, including 80s tribute band "Aquanett"

The Big E, Sept. 16-Oct. 2: So it's not in Connecticut, but it's the Grandaddy of them all. The Big E has food and products from all of the New England states, tons of exhibits, and did we mention FOOD! Darius Rucker, Reba and Blake Shelton provide the entertainment.

Guilford Agricultural Fair, Sept. 16-18: The entertainment is a highlight of this year's fair, with John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, James Wesley and Nicole Frechette all performing. The Guilford Fair Family Circus will feature the Flying Wallendas.

Orange Country Fair, Sept. 17-18: Saturday kicks off with Chip's famous Pancake Breakfast. There are hay bale tosses, a women's skillet toss and a Homing Pigeon release.

Durham Fair, Sept. 22-25: If you're looking for entertainment, this is the place to be. KC and the Sunshine Band plays Friday, with Blues Traveler taking the stage Saturday night and Steel Magnolia on Sunday. Of course there is plenty of food, rides, and animal exhibits too.
