Huskies, Terrapins to Open Season: Report

The conference in which UConn will be competing in 2013-14 might not have a name, but the schedule is beginning to take shape for Kevin Ollie's team. According to the Washington Post's Alex Prewitt, the Huskies will face the Maryland Terrapins at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York to open the 2013 season.

More details from the Hartford Courant's Dom Amore:

I’m told there isn’t a signed contract yet, so UConn will not speak to it, but that’s likely just a matter of time. The game would be Nov. 8, and part of Maryland’s multi-year deal with the Barclay’s Center to play games there. …

So we know that UConn will play Maryland in Brooklyn on Nov. 8, and  some combination of Boston College, Washington and Indiana in the Y2K Sports Classic in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 21 and 22. The Huskies will have two home  games as part of the Y2K, but the opponents and format are yet to be announced.

Their commitment in the conference-to-be-named-later, in which they will be one of 10 teams next season, will included home-and-home dates against their other nine. That means two games each against Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis, along with Maryland and possibly Indiana, there will be plenty of opportunities for quality wins.

The Huskies could conceivably return all five starters to a team that surprised everyone by winning 20 games. Building on Ollie's first-year success would only strengthen a program coming off academic probation, and a university looking to make itself as attractive as possible to other conference suitors (like, say, the ACC).
