It's touted as "the cure for the common Saturday night" -- and it might just be unlike anything you've seen.
New Haven's Ninth Square is trending up with hip restaurants (116 Crown and Miso) and literally-underground music spots (Firehouse 12 and Cafe 9). It's a welcome contrast from the bumping, thumping club district on Crown Street.
Enter: The latest addition to the scene - Artspace Underground. The Artspace gallery has been around for years, but in a refreshing maneuver, they’ve started throwing some really cool Saturday night parties. Think Williamsburg hipster loft party. But less crowded.
They’re happening every few weeks. Last month it was a fresh hip-hop DJ, a hot indie band and an “art happening.”
This Saturday, it features the LA indiepop band The Tartans, mixing it up along with Manchester indie/post-punk band Panda and Child.
The Tartans include string guitars, organs, a Rickenbacker bass and we're told the quartet (sometimes quintet) is full of soul and fun. Panda and Child have toured pretty extensively, and count Sonic Youth, The Rentals and Yo La Tengo as their influences.
The party starts at 8 p.m. Saturday night at Artspace, 50 Orange Street, New Haven.
And your $5 admission gets you a free drink ticket to use at 116 Crown after the event. Have fun. Just don’t tell too many people or it will become just as crowded as a Williamsburg loft.
