Skipping Rent Lands a Man Free Rent — In Jail

Roger Negri has been avoiding paying his rent in many Connecticut towns. Authorities finally caught up to him and offered him two more rent-free years – in jail.

The Westport man who has a history of skipping out on his rent in several Connecticut towns stiffed his landlord in Norwalk out of three months rent, leading to his current predicament.

Negri, 63, pleaded guilty in Norwalk Superior Court this week to a reduced charge of second-degree larceny and has been sent to jail for two years.

After the guilty plea, Judge Burton Kaplan gave Negri, a former maintenance worker at the Darien Police Department, a four-year sentence that will be suspended after two years served, followed by three years probation, The Stamford Advocate reports.

Negri and his wife, Desiree Wahlquist, were evicted from apartments in Darien, Stamford and New Canaan for not paying their rent before moving to Norwalk.

Wahlquist is facing identical charges. She's scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9.
