Smack Smackdown

Norwich police joined with local, state and federal authorities Thursday for Operation Smackdown, a daylong sweep that led to 21 arrests on charges related to a four-month long narcotics trafficking investigation in the Norwich area.

Thursday’s arrests were based on an investigation, which included surveillance and undercover work by the Norwich police department’s narcotics unit. It is one of several successful sweeps conducted this year aimed at stemming the flow of drugs and curtailing associated crimes, Norwich Police Capt. Timothy Menard said.

“We are sick and tired of these predators coming in and thinking they can take over our city,” Menard said. “We will continue to keep this element guessing and running.”

Menard said there are dealers moving into the area from larger cities with a gang mentality that can lead to more violent crime. Police are taking steps to stop that, he said.

Among those arrested on drug sales charges was Marzilas Braboy, the 18-year-old Norwich man arrested in October in connection with a Sept. 28 shooting on Broadway.

On Thursday, police raided homes at 95 Old Canterbury Turnpike, 92 Washington St. Apt. 2E, 125 Broadway and 16-E Adelaide Road. They confiscated $4,000 in cash, 6 grams of crack cocaine prepackaged for sale, 40 bags of heroin prepackaged for sale, two motor vehicles, one gun and a small amount of marijuana.

Norwich police were joined by New London and Groton city and town police, the state probation department, Department of Parole, State Police Statewide Narcotics Taskforce, agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Norwich Police Lt. Stephany Bakoulis said further arrests are expected.
