Putnam's on Fire, Go Enjoy It!

It's a smaller version of Providence's WaterFire right here in Connecticut

Light your grill, pitch your tent and set up those lawn chairs! This Saturday, head on over to Rotary Park in Putnam for the 3rd annual River Fire.

Putnam’s River Fire follows closely in the tracks of Providence’s famous Waterfire festival, but on a smaller scale. The main attractions are the 20 firelight-floating pots alongside the riverbank.

“Putnam is the quintessential New England town and the heart of it has been, and continues to be the Quinebaug River,” Mayor Robert Veins said. “It’s what made us boom back in the middle eras, and it’s important that we remember where we come from.”

Veins definitely seems to have the support of the entire community.

Local businesses donate all the funds, the public works department and the water pollution control authority light the fires at dusk, WINY will provide the relaxing music and the Lions Club will be barbecuing’ up some hamburgers and hot dogs.

Cross your fingers and pray it won’t rain because 3,000 people are expected to attend Saturday’s event.

“I didn’t want to turn it into a midway fair," the mayor said. “It’s basic -- just a great night in the park piped in along the riverbank.”

If you can’t get enough of Putnam, this Sunday is the 4th annual Main Street Car Cruise. With more than 3,500 show cars, it is one of the biggest car cruises in the NE corner. All the main streets are closed, but all local restaurants are open and will make one heck of a food court!

So get out and enjoy a relaxing weekend in Putnam, trust me, it'll put fire in your eyes!

If you can't make it on Saturday, the last Riverfire will be held on Sept. 12th.
