Roof Concerns Close Schools For Another Day

After several roof collapses, Vernon Public Schools have closed on Thursday as a precaution to clear the roofs. About 70 National Guardsmen are helping with snow removal.

Vernon Mayor Jason McCoy made a formal request for assistance from the state and pulled all resources from town departments to provide manpower and equipment to remove all snow from the schools.

The school district called in structural engineers earlier this week, who found a buildup of ice and snow that was too heavy and already causing some damage.

Ansonia Public Schools is also be closed to inspect the conditions of the roofs for snow and ice buildup.

Officials in South Windsor closed Wapping Elementary School for Thursday to allow staff to remove snow and prevent leaks and additional damage.
