UConn's 2014 recruiting class was among the best in the country. Hardly a surprise given the program's success, and coach Geno Auriemma's ability to get the most out of his players. But just seven games into her freshman season, Sadie Edwards will transfer, Auriemma announced on Tuesday.
“Sadie is a great kid who will be missed by the coaching staff and her teammates,” Auriemma said, via SNY.com. “Getting to know Sadie and her family has been a pleasure but she has voiced her desire to play more and we have come to the mutual agreement that this can best be accomplished at a different school. I wish Sadie nothing but the best in the future.”
Edwards, who played 29 minutes this season, appeared to understand before the season that playing time would be hard to come by.
“It’s very challenging, but that is what makes you a tougher person and a better basketball player," she said. "It shouldn’t be easy. If it is easy, then you are not going to get better the way that you want to. So it’s good that I’m challenged. I need to be challenged so that I can be the best player that I can be.”
Freshmen Courtney Ekmark, Gabby Williams and Kia Nurse remain from the 2014 class, and the 2015 class currently includes the nation's best high school player in Katie Lou Samuelson, and Napheesa Collier, De’Janae Boykin and Crystal Dangerfield are top-10 players. There's also Georgetown transfer (and 2013-14 Big East freshman of the year) Natalie Butler.
