One Pace University football player is dead after a police shooting in New York on Sunday morning and a Stamford man whose son was with the victim is calling the shooting “senseless.”
Desmond Hinds, of Stamford, was in the back seat of the car Danroy Henry Jr. was driving when the shooting happened in Mount Pleasant, New York, The New York Daily News reports.
"There were no guns or drugs or knives in the car and now somebody is dead for no reason," Hinds’ father, Desmond Hinds Sr., said. "They didn't even know about a fight. They were waiting for two of their friends ... There was no reason to fire shots."
Police said they were called to respond to fights in the parking lot of a bar in Mount Pleasant, New York . The two Pace University football players and Henry’s childhood friend were in a car parked outside.
An officer walked up to Henry’s car, knocked on the window and Henry sped off, and knocked an officer onto the hood, police told the Daily News.
As Henry drove, the officer hung onto the windshield, pulled his gun and fired several shots, police told the newspaper.
Henry, of North Easton, Massachusetts, died at the hospital, the Daily News reports. Brandon Cox, a friend of Henry’s, was shot in the arm. Hinds was not hurt, the Daily News reports.
Hinds attended Stamford High School and Iona College before transferring to Pace.
