Stanley to Close Plants

Cost-Saving Plan Will Mean Job Losses in Three States

The tough economic times for New Britain-based Stanley-Works are leading the company to close down plants in Connecticut, Vermont and Rhode Island.

Clinton-Stanley Bostich, a wire manufacturer, will close next year, eliminating 56 jobs in Clinton. The plant is Clinton's third largest tax payer. The move will mean a big loss of revenue for the town.

Small manufacturing plants in Pittsfield, Vt. and Quonset Point, R.I. will also shut down. Some employees will be offered jobs elsewhere in the company.

The moves are part of Stanley's major cost-reduction campaign and the plan to cut to cut 2,000 jobs, or 10 percent of its workforce.
