Stores: Small Business Saturday A Success

The holiday shopping season officially kicked off on Black Friday, but small businesses didn't want to miss out on the shopping action.

That's why many Connecticut stores participated in "Small Business Saturday," an initiative aimed at getting consumers into independently-owned retailers.

Kimberly Moster says business at her West Hartford clothing store, Kimberly Boutique, was brisk all day long.

"People are happy to support the local stores and this has kind of reminded them a little bit that they need to do that," Moster said.

American Express sponsored "Small Business Saturday."

The credit card company promised a $25 credit to cardholders who shop at small businesses on Saturday.

Kimberly Boutique promoted the program through Facebook.

Toy Chest, a West Hartford toy store, has been promoting the day for a while by e-mail.

Toy Chest General Manager Ed Dunn said lots of new faces stopped in the store on Saturday, which is a benefit to the entire community.

"It is a bottom line, but it's not necessarily ours. It's the community's bottom line which means that the money that gets spent here today, stays in the community," Dunn said.
