The Coast Guard Academy’s newest students expected to be challenged when they entered the esteemed academy, but they never imagined their health would be tested too.
Forty-five people at the school have been sickened by swine flu and the "swabs" have been hardest hit as they take part in a mandatory summer session, according to academy officials.
The first person at the school who showed symptoms of swine flu was isolated from other students and staff on July 9. Four days later, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the person had H1N1 flu.
Eight people are still being isolated, while the others have recovered, academy officials said.
Results from testing on two additional people remain pending at the CDC. Eight people in Connecticut have died after contracting the virus.
State officials recently held a daylong forum and discussed how to deal with swine flu in a school setting.
