Tim Hortons' Gut Instinct

The great marketing ploy that is free food

Who doesn't love freebies!? For all of you who just said "no" just stop reading right now. For the rest of us, there's pastry giveaways at a coffee shop that's made its way over the border and is obviously trying to win their way into people's hearts through their stomachs.

Tim Hortons, the Canadians' answer to Dunkin' Donuts, already has 11 locations across Connecticut and on Tuesday, July 21 all of those stores will be giving away blueberry donuts. Tim Hortons claims that its a way to "bring a quintessential taste of summer, blueberry, to its baked goods."

We, the smart consumer, see that its a quintessential way to drum up business and take a bite out of the competition, but its free food and we're hungry.

From 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. go into any Tim Hortons (check their website for locations) and get your donut. Their menu also includes muffins, bagels, danishes and something called a "Timbit" -- it's like a donut hole but don't make the mistake of calling it that.

Not to be outdone, Starbucks will also be giving away food on Tuesday, but you have to purchase something. Those marketing masters from Seattle are giving away a free pastry with the purchase of a beverage from opening until 10:30 am. That's a half-hour more than Tim Hortons so you could feasibly hit them both and get a balanced breakfast.
