Student Pilot Crashes Plane in Groton

A student pilot and his instructor suffered minor injuries when their single engine Cessna missed the runway at the Groton-New London Airport, and crashed Wednesday night.

Anthony Calanca, 54, of New Canaan, and Philip Baker, 72, of Amawalk, N.Y. were on the plane. It is not known who is the pilot and who is the student.

The tower reported losing the plane from radar around 6:30 p.m.

The pilot used his cell phone to tell rescue crews where the plane was and told police two people were on board and suffered minor injuries.

The plane was discovered a short time later in the woods in Bluff Point State Park.

The Department of Environmental Protection responded to clean up the fuel that spilled from the aircraft.  The FAA is conducting the investigation into the crash.
