UConn Champion Women Cancel Fenway Appearance

The UConn women's basketball team had to cancel an appearance at Fenway Park tonight.

Fresh off a double national championship, both the men and women's basketball teams were supposed to be honored together at Fenway Park tonight before the Yankees-Red Sox game, but the women has to cancel because of an unforeseen conflict.

"The team feels awful as it would have been a great moment for UConn and we have apologized to the Red Sox. The men are still scheduled to head up there and hopefully the Red Sox will consider having us at a later date," a statement from the UConn athletics department says.

A statement from the Red Sox says they do not have anything confirmed for another date.

The UConn men's team is still scheduled to make the trip and senior guard Shabazz Napier, of Roxbury, Mass., will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the game, which starts at 7:10 p.m.

Junior forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was scheduled to represent the women's team during the first pitch ceremony.
