It had been an uneventful offseason for Paul Pasqualoni's team, but less than two weeks into training camp the school announced that running back Joe Williams had been suspended indefinitely for violating team policies.
UConn didn't provide specifics into Williams' suspension, but the Hartford Courant notes that the running back was arrested on Aug. 9 and charged with credit card theft, illegal use of a credit card, and sixth-degree larceny.
According to the UConn arrest log, Williams, 19, of Northampton, Pennsylvania is accused of stealing a credit card on April 12. Police obtained a warrant on Aug. 1 and Williams turned himself in on Friday afternoon.
More details:
Williams, who was released after posting $1,000 bail, is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 20. He is charged with taking a credit card and $60 cash from an individual's wallet, according to the police report. The report says he used the credit card to purchase an item valued at $124.90, which was delivered to his address in Pennsylvania. According to the police report, the theft took place in April and the warrant for Williams' arrested was issued on Aug. 1.
Williams (5-11, 202) was in the mix for the backup job behind Lyle McCombs. Now sophomore Max Lorenzo appears to be the frontrunner for No. 2 running back duties.
