Attend Local Veterans Day Events

Today is a day to honor the men and women who serve in the United States military and several events are planned throughout the state. Here are some events you can attend and give your thanks to our brave Connecticut residents.

10 a.m. The Cheshire High School student group BRAVE (Bringing Remembrance to All Veterans Everywhere) holds a breakfast for veterans in the Cheshire High School, Cafeteria at 525 S. Main St.

10:45 a.m. Dedication of the seventh phase of the brick Veterans Walk of Honor in Bradley Point Park. All veterans are invited to participate in the solemn ceremony, which will feature a wreath-laying and remarks from Mayor John M. Picard and West Haven Veterans Council President Lori Grenfell.

11 a.m. The Waterbury Veterans Memorial Committee hosts a ceremony on the Waterbury Green, at 235 Grand St. in Waterbury.

11 a.m.:The City of Milford Veteran's Day wreath laying ceremony will be held in front of City Hall.

11 a.m. The East Haven Veterans Council hosts Veterans Day ceremonies at the War Memorial on the East Haven Town Green. At 10:45 a.m., the veterans and various Town and State officials will be leaving American Legion Post 89 on Thompson Avenue and will march down Main Street to the Town Green to render Honors. All veterans are invited to attend the service and take part in the walk to the Town Green. Of course, the public is encouraged to attend.

11 a.m. The City of New Haven and the Mayor's Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee will conduct their annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Center Church on the Green, at 311 Temple Street. The keynote address will be given by Korean War Veteran, retired Army Colonel Kenneth Gertz. Placement of memorial wreaths at the War Memorial on the lower New Haven Green and at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Long Wharf will immediately follow the program at Center Church.

12:15 p.m.:Ceremony at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Newington will continue all day, weather permitting.  The new flag plaques have been installed.  Come toll the bell for your veterans when his name is called.

12:30 p.m. The Waterbury Gold Star Mothers fold a luncheon at the Waterbury Elks Lodge
#265, at 283 W. Main St, Waterbury

2 p.m. Gov. Dannel Malloy will join veterans, military officials and other local and state leaders for the annual Veterans Day wreath laying ceremony at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown at 317 Bow Lane.

3 p.m. Central Connecticut State University will hold a Veterans Day observance ceremony at the Student Center; 1615 Stanley Street, New Britain

Bill Signings

Also at 11 a.m., Gov. Malloy will join state and local officials for a bill signing ceremony in Bridgeport to celebrate passage of two new state laws improving services for Connecticut's veterans.  The first, Public Act 13-57, provides honorary diplomas for Vietnam Era veterans who left high school early to join the armed forces.  The second, Public Act 13-224, allows municipalities to increase the additional property tax exemption for "100% disabled" veterans with limited income from two to three times the veteran's base exemption. The ceremony will be held at Port 5 Naval Veterans at 69 Brewster Street.
