What You're Doing This Weekend – Jan. 9 – 11

Yeah, yeah, yeah - it's cold out.  And sure, it'll snow. Don't use those excuses to stay inside.  There are tons of activities going on across the state this weekend for you and the kids.  Here are our top picks.

Hidden Gems

[un+art]-  The Hartford ArtSpace Gallery is having an opening reception for it's [un+art]-3 display Saturday night.  It's described as Hartford's only un+juried, un+censored, un+defined salon exhibit.  We don't know what it means, but we do know $5 will get you admission, entertainment, wine, and hors d'oeuvres.  We're in.

For the Soul- The Bushnell in Hartford is hosting a program called "Hot Chocolate Soul" Friday night.  It's described as a balance between music, comedy, and poetry - they say it's the ultimate performance showcase.  You'll find rising stars and entertainers and a really cool atmosphere.  $27 gets you in.

Family Fun

Disney on Ice-  Mickey and Minnie are going on a magical journey at the XL Center in Hartford.  You can get tickets as cheap as $15.25.  Bonus - one of the lead dancers is from Connecticut.  Click here to read more about Ashley Wong.

The Bean- Well this is pretty cool.  We found a place in Pomfret called Vanilla Bean Cafe.  They've got great food and drinks (for both kids and adults, if you're picking up what I'm putting down).  And Sunday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., they've got a special show for the little ones.  Ellis Paul will be performing folk, pop, rock, and storytelling music.

Date Ideas

What the...- Not gonna lie, this is a tough one to explain.  Momix Botanica is a show at the Warner Theater in Torrington this weekend.  It's a play that follows the New England seasons, the evolution of the world, and the passing of a day.  Looks bizarre, sounds cool.

Thought Provoking- Hartford Stage is putting on a show called "Dying City".  It's a tale of loss and grief that takes place in the shadow of post-9/11 New York.  The show was a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Out in CT- Cinestudio in Hartford is hosting it's Out Film CT Series on Sunday.  This week's screening features "Affinity" part of it's initiative to increase the number of LGBT films in the state.

And this just in... Our friends at Grant's in West Hartford center are running a snowy promotion because of the winter weather:  Buy one get one free entrees!  Be careful getting out there, but then, enjoy the food!
