7/17-7/19: Songs, Sunflowers and Sting

Here comes the sun and the sunflowers!

Oh baby, it’s the weekend and it looks like it will be a great one -- with temps in the 80's!  (Or so they say.)

The best way to start the weekend will be to relax and unwind listening to a two-time Grammy nominee at the Greater Hartford Festival Jazz in Bushnell Park.  Charlie Sepulveda and The Turnaround Band will be arriving from Puerto Rico to kick off the festival, which start at 7 p.m.

This gives you plenty of time to get home after work and change into shorts and your favorite pair of sandals.  You can get more information here.

One of the most celebrated bands in history sang, “ All You Need Is Love.” This timeless tune was released on July 17, 1967 and this weekend Beatles fans from all over CT will celebrate its 41st birthday.

You can join the Connecticut Beatles fan club and add some dinner, drinks and dancing to the mix at Aldario’s Restaurant in Milford.  Cost is $40.  You can call (203) 874-6096 to find out more.

A Connecticut summer isn’t complete with out it... The sixth annual “Sunflowers for Wishes” at Buttonwood Farm in Griswold will kick off this Saturday. With more than 400,000 beautiful sunflowers on display, people will flock like bumblebees to help raise awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Since its start in 2003, the event has raised $120,000 for children suffering from terminally ill diseases. There will be everything from clothing to bouquets to homemade ice cream and waffle cones. What a wonderful way to spend a sunny weekend -- with gardens of sunflowers and of course, smiles!

There are also two cancer fundraisers this Saturday.  There is Operation Give Life and the 2009 Hartford Relay for Life.

Room 960 presents the second annual Operation Give Life, a fundraising charity event for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Jimmy Fund. Guests are urged to wear purple and black as DJ's Randy Boyer and Tritonal will drop the beats.

Relay for Life will be at the XL Center in Hartford and will benefit the American Cancer Society.  It will be an all night walk-a-thon with hundreds of participants and survivors attending.

On Sunday, you should spend part of the day outside with Slow Food sponsoring a tour and sharing a picnic at FRESH New London, an educational community garden and farm. You can attend the event for $20 and bring your kids for free.

Participants will meet at Williams and Mercer Streets in New London for the tour and the  picnic will be held at the community garden.  You can make a reservation by calling (860) 444-8050.

Finally wrap up your weekend with a classic concert.  Superstar Sting, has collected as a solo performer 11 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations.  He will be performing at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
The show should be great and tickets will cost you $125 to $250.  But to see a legend?  C'mon.  Live a little.  The show starts at 8 p.m.

So enjoy your weekend out in the sun!  Heck, spend it out on the beach if you want too, because the way the weather has been in Connecticut this could be one of the few good weekends!
