Zoup! Glorious Soup

Oh, the weather out there is frightful and it’s going to get worse, so we’re looking forward to a new soup place opening.

It’s called Zoup and it opens on Dec. 18 at Somerset Square in Glastonbury.

The menu’s not up yet. It won’t be up until the restaurant opens next week, but we have the inside scoop and two soups you can expect to see are lobster bisque.

“It has large chunks of lobster,” owner Tom Legere’s favorite said.

And chicken potpie, which just happens to be Legere’s favorite.

“I love it. Probably too much,” he said.

Other than that, the rest of the menu will have to remain a mystery  until next Friday.

But we do know this: there will be 12 different soups everyday and there are 100 in all.

To plan your lunch or dinner, all you have to do it go to the location’s Web site. The menu will be updated daily and more often if a menu selection changes -- like when we all rush in for chicken potpie and eat Legere out of his supply.

Other items on the master menu include shrimp and crawfish etoufee, chili, veggie and overstuffed bell pepper. Not sure if etoufee’s your thing? No worries, Zoup gives out samples.

Legere received the first shipment – 80 soups -- and it took up half of a tractor-trailer.

“I was a bit glossy eyed when I saw it,” Legere said.

In case you are not in the mood for soup or want more than soup, there will also be salads, sandwiches, desserts and more.

This is the first restaurant for Legere, 47, of Niantic. He had heard about Zoup and liked the idea, but he was not going to invest unless he loved the food.

“I was not ready to sign on until I actually tasted their products,” he said.

So, he and a group of friends hopped in the car and made the journey to the closest one – Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Luckily, after making the long trek, they all loved it.

“Nobody was disappointed,” he said.

They will be open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
